Throughout the past two months I have been seeing Dragonflies everywhere I go. Since Dragonfly is in my totem, I know the messages being given to me.

dra1

At this time Dragonfly is reminding me of my transformation and my ability to move through the physical and the etheric worlds.

They have been appearing right in front of me every day now. It is so nice to enjoy this communication.

Learning about symbology just deepens your daily experiences. If I had not known about Dragonfly, I would probably ignore their presence and just think they are flying around, without connection. When I feel their message in my heart, Dragonfly makes one more pass by me and very close to acknowledge I connected and received.

The Dragonfly symbolizes good luck, strength, peace, harmony, light and transformation, the unconsciousness mind, defeat of self-created illusions, opening one’s eyes, and maturity.

dra2

The dragonfly inhabits two realms: air and water and the influence of both these elements will be felt by Dragonfly people.

They will be emotional and passionate during their early years (water) and more balanced with greater mental clarity and control in as they mature (air).

Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change, the messages of wisdom and enlightenment; and the communication from the elemental world. Dragonfly medicine beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which need changing.

Call on Dragonfly when you need guidance through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation.

Cultural Views

dra3

In ancient lore, the dragonfly represents transformation, adaptation and insight.

In Germany dragonflies had over 150 different names. In England the name Devil’s darning needle and Horse stinger have been used.

In Denmark the dragonfly have got such different names as “Devil’s riding horse” and “Goldsmith”.

The Swedish name for dragonfly is “hobgoblin fly”. Long time ago people in Sweden believed that hobgoblins, elves, brownies and such creatures lived in our great woods. In that folklore the dragonflies was considered to be the hobgoblins twisting tools.

dra4

In China, people associate the dragonfly with prosperity, harmony and as a good luck charm.

Dragonflies are depicted often in Japanese paintings as representations of new joy and light.

In the Lakota mythology, the dragonfly is equated with the mirage or illusion, because their wings beat so rapidly that the human eye cannot see it.

In the Lakota tribe, this insect and concept of illusion was often invoked when they wanted to confused their enemies.  Dragonfly represented the god or spirit of “Whirlwind.”

dra5

Among Native Americans, it is a sign of happiness, activity, speed and purity. For the Navajo they symbolize pure water.

Dragonflies are a common motif in Zuni pottery; stylized as a double-barred cross, they appear in Hopi rock art and on Pueblo necklaces.

In Ireland and parts of Europe, dragonflies were associated with fairies.  Some fables and fairy tales, if you will, told that if you followed a dragonfly, it would lead you to fairies.  Others said that they were the steeds of fairies.  This leads to an association with magic.

dra6

Dragonflies are so full of spiritual energy and a sort of magic, that they represent the ability to travel between dimensions.

Ancient Insect

This particular insect has been on Earth for over 100 million years.  Because of this, they have a wonderful ability to adapt to their surroundings.

Dragonflies have had a presence on planet Earth millions of years before the dinosaurs. Their lineage is considered to be one of the oldest among the insect species.

They carry on their wings some kind of magic not apparent in other insects.

dra7

The dragonfly’s powerful and unique metamorphosis is a metaphorical message for the transformation humanity must now undergo.

Dragonfly Medicine

“Dragonfly medicine is asking me to dig deeper, to see beyond the illusions, to be present in the here and now with no regrets, to heal my wounds so I may live fully, to embrace change. It is easier said than done as we humans are so conditioned and attached to our comfort zones, even if those comfort zones are unhealthy and not supporting us.

dra8

One of the greatest gifts that comes from dragonfly spirit is the understanding of our need for balance between the two worlds of mundane matter and spiritual truth.

Dragonfly zips about doing her dance here yet manages to maintain her magic and light. She illuminates the two worlds, the polarity between matter and spirit.

Many people deny their birthright and power as spiritual beings, some spend their lives in temples atop mountains seeking spirit, while others struggle to find the balance. We are consumed by the pace and stress of modern life which leaves little time or energy to connect with the deeper meaning of life. Yet this is what dragonfly totem asks of us.” ~ from http://dragonflytimes.com

Transformation

dra9

Dragonfly easily flits around from place to place with ease.

In some lore, the dragonfly was once a dragon who passed through the veil so many times, he changed in to the tiny form he is in today.

He is no longer the big mass, but a very quick and agile motion that can go where he pleases, transformed.
